RoHS 2 2011/65/EU & RoHS 3 2015/863

Ensuring Your Products Stay Legal and Market-Ready: Understanding RoHS Compliance

Substances regulated under RoHS were mainly developed, but not limited to, the manufacture or import of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) sold in the European Union, UK, or many other countries worldwide, you must comply with the RoHS Directives commonly known as RoHS 2 (2011/65/EU) and its amendment RoHS 3 (2015/863).

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) strictly limits ten dangerous substances in your products:

  • Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent Chromium (CrVI)
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB), Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)
  • Four phthalates added in RoHS 3: DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP

These substances are limited to 0.1% (0.01% for cadmium) by weight in any homogeneous material. The rules apply to virtually all EEE—from household appliances and IT equipment to toys, medical devices, and monitoring instruments—unless a specific exemption applies (and most exemptions are temporary and narrowing).

Non-compliance is serious: authorities can block your goods at customs, force costly product recalls, issue heavy fines, damage your brand reputation, and even lead to criminal penalties in some jurisdictions. In today’s market, major buyers (large retailers, OEM customers) now demand valid RoHS documentation before listing or accepting your products.

Professional RoHS compliance testing, technical file creation, and Declaration of Conformity are not optional extras. They are the shield that keeps your business trading smoothly and profitably.

Partnering with an experienced compliance service removes the risk, saves you time and money, and gives your customers confidence that every shipment meets the latest RoHS requirements. Don’t leave your market access to chance, one failed inspection can cost far more than prevention ever will.

Perform a risk assessment  or Book a compliance review and secure your products’ future in the EU/UK market today.
