Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the “forever chemicals” famous for making products water-, grease-, and stain-resistant, are now under aggressive global attack. The EU is finalizing a universal PFAS restriction under REACH (expected adoption 2025–2026), while individual countries including Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands have already submitted the proposal to ban more than 10,000 PFAS compounds in almost all uses. California, Maine, New York, and ten other US states have enacted or are enacting their own PFAS bans in consumer goods. Even China is tightening limits.

These rules will affect polymers, textiles, food-contact materials, cosmetics, waterproof clothing, non-stick cookware, electronics coatings, cables, seals, gaskets, and countless other products. Once adopted, thresholds can be as low as 25 ppb for any single PFAS or 250 ppb for the sum—levels so strict that many manufacturers are shocked to discover their “PFAS-free” claims are already false.

Non-compliance consequences are brutal: full product bans, border rejections, forced recalls, multimillion-euro fines, class-action lawsuits, and irreversible reputational damage when activists and media label your brand a “forever chemical polluter.” Major retailers are already demanding PFAS-free certificates and third-party test reports before allowing listings.
